Kyle Hobratschk

My work is drawing-based to better understand the structure of buildings and botanicals and their relation to space and one another’s form. I draw on location and from life, working within the realm of realism and using photographs for reference only when I cannot return to a site.

Places like the Dallas Farmers Market and early twentieth-century farm houses interest me as examples of the built environment, and provide me with compositional structures of support beams, trusses, and near-right angles. Within this grounded structure I draw the repetitive forms, colors and textures found in produce and architectural ornament. This process translates to my still life and botanical studies where I ground the subject in a formal, centered composition without detracting elements.
